Working Up An Appetite for a Peru Vacation
A lot of international food lovers are now whispering that Peru should be considered the new “gastronomic capital” of the Americas. It’s easy to see why. Peru has been luring innovative chefs from around the globe with an abundance of fresh, local ingredients – especially seafood – and an appreciative dining public. The restaurant scene in Lima is becoming legendary. Peruvian culinary traditions (some that go back to the time of the Incas) are celebrated, then expanded upon. A definite highlight to any Peru vacation.
Given all that, it only makes sense that Peru is home to Mistura, the largest food festival in Latin America. Every year, thousands of foodies from around the world descend on the beaches of Lima for Mistura. For ten days, festival goers taste one culinary delight after the next.

When you visit Peru, you have to try the ceviche, a dish so popular, it has its own national holiday. Classic Peruvian ceviche is comprised of chunks of raw fish, marinated in lime or bitter orange juice, onions, chili peppers, salt and pepper. There are, of course, plenty of variations on the theme, many of which include cilantro or even tomatoes.
If ceviche is Peru’s national dish, Pisco is its national spirit. One of the most popular ways to enjoy this traditional brandy made with fermented grape juice is in a Pisco Sour. This cocktail originated in Lima and is prepared with egg white, lime juice, simple syrup, and bitters. You’ll find no shortage of Pisco Sours in Lima.

Peru’s capital city is brimming with intriguing neighbourhoods, lively markets, and exciting restaurants. From the historic centre of the city, Plaza Mayor, to the bohemian district of Barranco, the city is full of delightful surprises to be discovered on your Peru vacation.
Of course, no trip to Peru would be complete without a bucket list visit to the lost Incan city of Machu Picchu. Hidden high in the Andes, Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It is believed to have been built in the 15th century and remained hidden for over 400 years.
