Travel on a Holiday of a Lifetime Downunder

A vacation downunder is for many people, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. With great weather, friendly locals, amazing scenery, and unique wildlife, there is a lot to love about Australia and New Zealand.

As part of our Holidays of a Lifetime roster, we offer three small group, fully escorted vacations to explore, enjoy, and experience these two great countries. The 20-Day Waltzing Matilda, our inaugural Holiday of a Lifetime, is the ultimate tour of both Australia and New Zealand. It incorporates the main sights of both countries, leaving guests to return with a lifetime of memories.

Starting your vacation in Sydney, Australia, spend three nights in this amazing city. Sightseeing highlights include a private lifesaving demonstration on Bondi Beach, a visit to the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Cruise, and a visit to the Blue Mountains.

The journey continues to Cairns, gateway to Tropical North Queensland for three nights. Here, guests will enjoy a Great Barrier Reef cruise, a day in the Rainforest that includes time spent with local Aboriginal guides, and even the chance to cuddle a koala.

Next stop is the Red Centre, home to world famous Uluru (the Indigenous and correct name for Ayers Rock). Here, our small group will experience more indigenous culture, explore the Rock and also Kata Tjuta (or the Olgas) and enjoy a special Sounds of Silence dinner in the desert with stargazing. We also stop at Alice Springs for a highlight dinner – an outback sunset dinner cooked by an indigenous Master Chef that ends with animal spotting by flashlight.

After time in the Red Centre, guests can choose to travel to Adelaide by flight or by overnight journey on the world famous Ghan Train, where they can enjoy private cabin accommodation, gourmet meals and beverages, and off-train excursions (definitely a once in a lifetime journey!). On arrival in Adelaide, all guests will enjoy city sightseeing, a visit to the Adelaide Hills with a gourmet lunch, and some wine-themed touring.

Last stop in Australia is Melbourne, the most cosmopolitan city in Australia. This is an amazing couple of days that includes a visit to Phillip Island to see the little penguins, a walking tour of the hidden lanes and arcades in the city, and a city sightseeing tour. We end with a special gourmet dinner on board a historic tramcar restaurant.

The group then continues to New Zealand. First stop is Christchurch before continuing to the alpine town of Queenstown, which is arguably one of the most scenic towns in New Zealand. Here we will enjoy some well-deserved free time, along with a fantastic day trip to Milford Sound for a cruise of this gorgeous fjord. We continue to Rotorua, the cultural capital of New Zealand. Highlights here include a visit to the Rotorua Museum, touring of a geothermal reserve, and a cultural evening with hangi dinner (a meal cooked underground).

The last stop on this unforgettable journey is Auckland. On the way, visit Hobbiton and the Waitomo Caves for an underground excursion to see thousands of glow worms. See Auckland on a city sightseeing tour and end this Holiday of A Lifetime with a cruise on Auckland Harbour.

For guests short on time, the Waltzing Matilda could be split in to two different trips, the 13-Day Best of Australia or the 8-Day Best of New Zealand.

Our Tour Directors are not only experts on looking after their guests, they are also there to teach you about local customs and culture. You will also enjoy local guides in select locations. Many meals are included, tipping is included, and all accommodation is first class or better.

Travelling in a group with like-minded Globetrotters is very rewarding, as it opens up conversation, creates a fun atmosphere, and can form lifelong lasting friendships – long after your Holiday of a Lifetime experience ends. In fact, we find that the first thing many travellers do when they get home is to peruse the other Holidays of a Lifetime itineraries Goway offers, and perhaps plan something together with their newly found friends.
