Balboa claiming the Pacific

The Pacific Ocean covers one third of the planet, but until 1513 none of the powerful European empires even knew it existed. The book recounts the Balboa story as the first European’s sighting of the Mar de Sur (Southern sea). Sherry covers Magellan’s search and discovery of a strait connecting to the west side of the Americas, to the body of water he named Mar Pacifico – Pacific Ocean. He goes onto to discuss the many other Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, French and English explorers who dreamed of exploits in the great ocean and the New World. The book is a great insight into humankind’s desire to discover and explore.
