Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Across Central & South America
The diverse regions of Central and South America contain some of the world’s biggest and most impressive sites. Not only does travelling among these destinations involve various forms of transportation, but each journey in the region has its own story, its own allure, and are often memorable experiences in themselves.
Planes
Fly over the steep Andes Mountains in Peru from coastal Lima to highland Cusco, or journey south in Chile, following the spine of the Andes to your left as your fly from Santiago to Punta Arenas and Southern Patagonia. Take in the grandeur of Brazil and Argentina’s Iguassu Falls from above, or the magic of Rio at night in a helicopter, or even appreciate the scope of the Peruvian Nazca lines on an overflight in lite aircraft.
Suggested travel ideas:
Rio – Jewel in the Crown
And don’t forget that travellers can take the ultimate excursion and fly south Antarctica for a day!
Trains
With the Andes a predominant geographical feature of South America, a train journey takes on a new level of excitement. The famous train journey down Peru’s Sacred Valley to the foot of Machu Picchu is a highlight for most. You can also enjoy the many switchbacks of the famous Devils Nose Railway in Ecuador – where you travel from the Andean highlands to the humid lowlands, or a journey into the high altitudes of northern Argentina.
Suggested rail journeys:

Argentina: Train to the Clouds
Automobiles
South America’s vast distances make driving a tough choice, but the relatively short distances of Costa Rica make a self-drive option here the perfect choice!
