Here at Goway Travel, we’ve queried a few of our destination specialists across departments and asked them to share what they think are the best destinations for history buffs around the world. What are the top destinations for History Buffs?

I love history so really any place for me is inspiring as you are walking on history no matter where you go. As a WWI amateur historian the battlefields of WWI in Europe hold special interest to me. Visiting Russia recently was also awesome as the history there goes back so far and has had such a powerful impact on modern-day geopolitics. Really, when you come from Australia, where white history only goes back around 200 years, anything beyond that age is fascinating. Then let’s not forget about the Indigenous history, which is timeless and all around you!

Egypt

Egypt is great for its history and just incredible monuments and feats of engineering such as the many museums in Cairo to the Great Pyramids, Abu Simbel (one of my personal favourites) and the Valley of the Kings, to name a few. Sites are still being discovered and the history goes back for many millennia.

India

India offers everything from palaces to temples to forts to the crème de la crème of all man-made wonders, the Taj Mahal.

Europe

History is probably my favourite thing about Europe. I can’t narrow down a country, but Italy would have to be a good start. The history, the origin of Italian culture and food, their language and all the stories that everything tells is huge. Germany is really high on my list and I have not been, but I know that I will fall in love with it since there’s so much global history there as well. You will always find me doing local walking tours, going into churches, and looking for the oldest restaurants I can find to see where everything originated from, in whichever country I’m exploring.

I am obsessed with castles and I could do a tour of the best castles in Europe and learn about each one of them and that would make me so happy.

Italy

I studied Fine Arts in university and have been able to take a couple trips to Italy. I love that so much has been preserved: the Vatican and Borghese Gallery in Rome; the ruins of Pompeii, where you can see the ruts made by chariots before it was buried; Florence with its architecture and monuments. You can enjoy all this along with fantastic food and wine in Italy. There are hundreds of years of history at your fingertips when you walk down the street.

There are so many historic sites in Italy, from the Colosseum to the Roman Forum, the Vatican, and many other places.

Greece or London

It’s so hard to pick between the two. I love the museums in London. Plus, to be honest, just walking through the city can make you feel like you have gone back in time. But I love Greece for its historical monuments.

Not only is the country absolutely stunning and the water some of the nicest to swim in, but the diverse history of this skinny nation on the Dalmatian Coast is fascinating and architecturally beautiful.
