Destination Specialists Share Their Favourite Places for Sports Fans

Here at Goway Travel, we’ve reached out to a few of our destination specialists across departments and asked them to share what they think are the best spots for sports fans around the world. If you see some of your favourite sports destinations on our list or want to share your own thoughts about where you’re hoping to travel when this pause in travel is all over, let us know in the comments.

What are your favourite places for sports fans?

Spain and the UK

I don’t know about everyone else, but being a mad soccer fan, one of my favourite sporting experiences during travel was being able to see FC Barcelona play at Camp Nou, the largest stadium in Europe. It was a midweek cup game, but we were lucky enough to get to see Lionel Messi and some other superstars of the game play. We had a horrible view, right up in the nose-bleed section, but it was well worth it.

The second was being able to visit Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, and do a complete stadium tour. I got to sit in the substitutes right red chairs and walk alongside the pitch. There’s so much history with that soccer club, and I was so glad I got to share a moment on my European vacation.

So the top place has to be the UK, but close seconds are Spain, Germany, and Portugal (there’s amazing surf there).

Germany, the UK, and France

For soccer I think the UK and Germany are great destinations—not that I would be biased coming from Germany. I think the Allianz arena in Munich is great to visit and the team FC Bayern Munchen is also pretty popular (not my personal team *ahem* but I guess they’re a good choice for international travellers). Portugal is great for surfing, and so is France around St. Jean-de-Luz and Lacanau-sur-mer, the whole land tongue under the Gironde. You can also do white water kayaking and rafting in France on the Ardeche River. It’s honestly a great experience to try.

Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is one of the best sporting capitals in the World. Not only does it boast the 10th largest sports stadium in the world, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which holds cricket and Australian Rules Football matches throughout the year and has a dedicated Australian sporting museum. Melbourne also plays host to the Australia Open and the Australian Formula One as well as having international surfing competitions along the Great Ocean Road. Melbourne is truly your one-stop-shop for sport in Australia.

South Africa

One of my favourite sporting experiences to date will have to be the World Cup in South Africa. Attending Portugal vs Spain match was an experience I will never forget. The sound of thousands of vuvuzelas is something you can definitely not forget easily. If you have not heard this sound before you need to check out this unique instrument. Cape Town is still a great sporting destination outside of the World Cup. The unique Cape mountain range provides a great playing ground for many sporting activities like hiking, paragliding, surfing, kiteboarding, and much more. And if you are looking for a more thrilling experience, a four-hour drive north to Bloukarns will let you experience one of the highest bungee jumps in the world.
