3 Walking Safaris in South Africa

Going on a safari for the first time is thrilling enough, in fact even going on a game drive for the 100th time is still as exciting for a veteran safari goer like myself, so imagine the excitement of going on a walking safari. There is something to be said for feeling the African earth beneath your feet, as you set out to witness a spectacular sunrise, breathe in the crisp air, and take in the unusual smells and sounds of the bush… your heart pounding in anticipation of what you may encounter. This is one of the finest moments on your Africa vacation! Here are 3 walking safaris we offer in South Africa.

Rhino Walking Safari
Our 5-Day Rhino Walking Safari is located in the iconic Kruger National Park, which offers a wildlife experience second to none! With a maximum of only 8 guests, Plains Camp offers luxury tented accommodation, and 2 qualified guides will share their wealth of bush knowledge, from the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects, and birds, to the medicinal uses of plants, folklore, and basic tracking and survival skills.

For something completely unique, guests are also able to walk to the “Sleepouts” – elevated wooden platforms where the night will be spent sleeping under the stars!

Marataba Walking Trails
The Marakele Reserve is home to our 5-Day Marataba Walking Trails tour, and the Marataba Trails Lodge, from where the only malaria-free, Big 5 walking trails in South Africa begin. A variety of options are available, which vary in terms of the degree of difficulty and make use of the different eco-systems within the park. From mountain trails, to riverine trails to gorge trails – the one thing they all have in common is the amazing flora and fauna to be encountered along the way!

Africa on Foot
Our 4-Day Africa on Foot safari is an affordable option for those wanting to experience an authentic African safari, but don’t necessarily have the budget for a deluxe game lodge. Situated in the Klaserie Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park, this intimate family-run camp offers guests the choice to do game drives or walks in this wildlife rich reserve. There is also a 5-day option for this walking safari.
