When deciding on a cocktail, no doubt you have seen a Singapore Sling being offered on a drink menu, and may have even tried one – with each bartender offering a bit of their own variation.
The original Singapore Sling was created in 1915 by head bartender, Ngiam Tong Boon, who worked at the Long Bar in the famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore. Given its bright pink colour, it was created namely for women. In those days, it was not etiquette for ladies to drink alcohol in public, so Ngiam saw an opportunity to use a clear liquor and mask it as a fruit punch. Since then, however, men too have enjoyed this signature cocktail, which has been shared around the globe.
Today, this gin-based drink goes down well on a hot summer day, or can be enjoyed with appetizers.
- 1-1/2oz gin
- 1/2oz cherry heering (cherry brandy)
- 1/4oz Cointreau liqueur
- 1/4oz benedictine
- dash of bitters
- 1/3oz grenadine
- 1/2oz lime juice
- 4oz pineapple juice
- Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker.
- Add ice and shake.
- Fill a Collins, highball, or medium glass with ice.
- Strain the cocktail into the glass. For a bit of a decorative froth on top, again shake the last little bit of remaining cocktail and strain.
- Garnish with a cherry and slice of pineapple.
