There are currently 25,598—no, wait—make that 25,599 hotels in Thailand. And there will probably be three more opening tomorrow the way things are going. So how do you choose the best options for your clients heading on their honeymoon? Sure, you could go to Trip Advisor, cross your fingers, twirl around three times while touching your nose, and hope for the best outcome for your clients; however, this is not a strategy I’d recommend.
So what do you do? How do you choose the right hotel for your client?
With so many hotels available, there are more than just a few that could’ve made our short list for top options for honeymoons. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it will get you started. For now, we’ve outlined some of our staff’s picks for the best 5-star hotels on the Andaman Sea (Phuket and Krabi). In follow-up articles, we’ll focus on the Gulf of Thailand and our picks for the best 4-star options as well.
There’s no question that Thailand has many hotels to choose from for honeymooners, but my go-to property to recommend is the Surin. It’s a classic and for good reason. I’ve been booking this property for years and always get excellent feedback from clients regarding it, so when I can’t afford to leave anything to chance, I pick the Surin.
Surin Beach is quiet and located up the west coast of Phuket about a 45-minute drive from the airport and Patong Beach. Honeymooners can have the best of both worlds here. They can enjoy the frenetic pace of Patong shopping during the day and then tuck themselves away to the lull of the surf in Pansea Bay at night. The hotel is located beachfront, but with Phuket being quite cliffy, the beach-style cottages dot the hillside with the more expensive beachfront suites near the ocean and the entry-level cottages at the top of the hill.
Something to keep in mind: I would ensure my honeymooners don’t have any mobility issues as the climb up-and-down the hillside can be challenging. Also, get excited as the Surin gets top marks for the best breakfast buffet of all the hotels I’ve ever stayed at. Sadly, you won’t be able to try everything on the menu unless you stay there many, many days.
Steve’s Pick for Phuket: Keemala Hotel Phuket — Where clients get the “wow” experience (Meet Steve)
I definitely have a number of favourite hotels to recommend in Phuket depending on the client’s budget but right now, my favourite pick has got to be the Keemala Resort. I can pretty much guarantee complete satisfaction with this refuge perched in the tree tops of Phuket offering incredible views of the Andaman Sea.
Firstly, the resort is like no other. You can choose from tree top cottages or luxury tented villas, some with private pools. Each room has its own unique charm that your clients just won’t get at 90 percent of resorts in the world. If they happen to stay during their honeymoon or anniversary, they’ll get a bottle of sparkling wine along with a beautiful exotic flower arrangement and luxury fruit basket to make them feel extra special.
Regardless of the reasons you choose this oasis for your clients, the service is top notch. The tree top villas will have couples feeling like Tarzan and Jane with the soft murmur of jungle noises lulling them to sleep. And the VIP fast track Phuket airport pickup is a nice added touch as well. Simply put, you can’t go wrong recommending the Keemala to your VIP clients.
Diane’s Pick for Krabi: Rayavadee Resort & Spa — All-around best 5-star resort in Railay Beach (Meet Diane)
Located on Railay Beach, Krabi, and only accessible by boat, the 5-star Rayavadee Resort & Spa is my top pick, so much so that I’ve stayed there multiple times. Individual double story bungalows—some with private pool, others with private terraces—are hidden beneath a jungle canopy. Oriental pied hornbills and spectacled langurs, a masked member of the primate family, are local denizens who double as the entertainment. Sheer limestone, rock-climbing cliffs circle the resort on all sides. It is pure luxury and I love it. But what I love almost as much is that the Rayavadee is located just a seashell’s toss away from the local backpackers’ hangout.
For those who don’t know me well, I spent three years travelling the world by backpack. Sadly, those years have long gone. The Rayavadee, however, allowed me the indulgence to escape back to my backpacker days. One night, I could dine in the fabulous, often-photographed Rayavadee Grotto, a famed cave restaurant offering sumptuous barbeque, and the next night I could have two-dollar pizza at a reggae bar drinking Mai Tais as the chasers. To the team of exceptionally friendly Rayavadee staff: I am your forever fan. That’s why this gem in Krabi gets my top vote for best honeymoon hotel in Thailand.
