The Oyster Box

I confess I love all things South Africa! It’s got so many facets and is home to so many special places. Of course, Cape Town is spectacular, as is the Kruger National Park, and that’s why they are included in so many itineraries. There is another, very underrated, exceptional place, that in my opinion should be included in more travel plans. It’s Isimangaliso in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

Even the word sounds special. In fact, it means ‘miracle and wonder’ in Isizulu. There’s a reason it was declared South Africa’s first world heritage site. Its eight interdependent ecosystems, and overwhelming diversity of flora and fauna, contain over 450 different species of animals and birds. Here, you will find the only remaining major site in Africa where Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles still lay their eggs (a great experience to include during nesting season). It’s also South Africa’s top diving destination, home to the big seven. i.e. the Big Five – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino (black and white) plus southern right whales and the great white sharks. You’ll also see giraffes, wild dogs, cheetahs, hyenas and various antelope.

Nelson Mandela said “This wetland park must be the only place on the globe where the world’s oldest land mammal (the rhinoceros) and the world’s biggest land mammal (the elephant) share an ecosystem with the world’s oldest fish (the coelacanth) and the world’s biggest marine mammal (the whale).” Well said, Madiba! I recommend a minimum 3-night stay. That way you can enjoy all that it has to offer, including unspoiled beaches, vast wetlands, game drives, a boat cruise on the estuary, and season permitting, a turtle tour. There are not many places where you can have a game drive in the morning and spend the afternoon on the beach.

Include Kwazulu Natal on any bookings you make between 01 January and 31st March 2019, and you’ll earn $25 on your Goway Rewards card. There are many different itineraries to choose from. The most comprehensive, showcasing the best of KwaZulu Natal is Secrets of KwaZulu Natal. Here you can safari in South Africa’s oldest game reserve, experience the beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains, tour the Natal Battlefields, see Durban and visit Shakaland for a Zulu Cultural experience.
