2. Sovereign Hill and Ballarat Day Tour
Journey through the town of Ballarat (a short drive, or day tour from Melbourne) and see the Victorian architecture of a prosperous era. Many travellers are surprised to learn Australia experienced a similar ‘Gold Rush’ to the more famous Alaskan/Yukon Gold Rush of North America, and its fascinating! Absorb the history as you step back in time to the gold rush era at Sovereign Hill, the perfectly re-created 1850’s gold-mining settlement. There will be opportunities to pan for gold, tour underground mines or ride a stagecoach. Visit the Eureka Stockade Centre and learn of the notorious day of rebellion. Wander the main street to visit goldsmiths, craftsmen and traders and browse the unique period-style stores along with real-life characters and story re-enactments. Watch traditional skills being practised by wood turners and metallurgists, using age-old techniques. This is a fun and educational experience for both children and adults alike!
New Zealand has fantastic routes for Self-drives, but they also have a gem for Tolkien fans!
